This paper addresses the efficiency of the contention-based polling mechanisms at the bandwidth reservation stage of IEEE 802.16 standard operation. A general proposition about «symmetrical» user grouping in the random multiple access system is proved. Broadcast and multicast contention-based polling mechanisms are analyzed, for which the performance of the truncated binary exponential «backoff» algorithm is optimized given different system settings.
